From Concept to Craft: Developing a Debut Feature Screenplay

My first full-length feature film, Maha Maya (also known as The Dark Mother), has been evolving steadily since June 2023, shaped by research, collaboration, and a commitment to telling a meaningful story.

At its core, Maha Maya explores themes that are both culturally rooted and universally resonant. The development process has involved extensive screenplay work, refining narrative structure, character depth, and visual storytelling. Like many independent projects, this journey has required balancing creative ambition with practical realities—an experience that has been both challenging and immensely rewarding.

A significant milestone in this process was receiving a $25,000 development grant from artsACT in 2025. This support has played a crucial role in advancing the project, allowing for dedicated time toward script development, professional consultation, and strengthening the overall vision of the film. Funding initiatives such as those provided by artsACT are vital in empowering emerging filmmakers to bring original stories to life, particularly within the Australian screen industry.

Equally important has been the opportunity to collaborate with experienced industry professionals. Their insights and mentorship have contributed greatly to refining the screenplay and elevating the project to a higher standard. Engaging with established voices in the field has not only enhanced the creative direction of Maha Maya but has also provided invaluable learning throughout the development phase.

Since June 2023, the screenplay has undergone continuous evolution—draft after draft—each iteration bringing greater clarity and emotional depth. This process reflects the reality of filmmaking: a long-term commitment to growth, revision, and creative exploration.
